and yeah, sorry about the title, but it had to be done.
So a few days ago I posted on the bizarreness of using a barbecue as a fundraising for a local zoo (please see previous post). Yesterday I was back in The Big City and got to hear another radio ad for this event.
The commercial in question starts with a woman explaining that she has four kids and a wide variety of pets, including cats, dogs, hamsters, birds, etc., so her children obviously love animals. The radio announcer says, 'why don't you bring them to the zoo?' He then explains how the zoo is holding a fundraiser called "Brew at the zoo." Yes, that's "brew." It's a day of a wide variety of beer to sample, free live rock music, and zoo tours. (Plus the aforementioned barbecue, of course.)
Bring the kids.
For beer.
And to see the animals who have nothing better to do than spend a day in a zoo imbibing to their hearts' content.
Plus, you know... there are the zoo tours... and the barbecue....
The ad ends with the mother presumably surrendering to the inevitable when her children want to add a monkey to the home-based menagerie.
And I find myself unable to even begin to explore on how many levels that this fundraising idea is wrong. So I'm going to go back to my corner to rock, and you are all welcome to join me.

You spend far too much time alone thinking too much. I think you have the wrong impression of the commercial.
Well, yes, I'm alone with my brain too much. But the ad was saying "bring your children to the zoo... where we are serving beer." The day is called "Brew at the zoo." It's being held during the day. When children are there. In summer... when children are there. How is this misinterpreting the ad, and how is this not a little strange?
you can have a couple of beers and not be drunk...I actually at my size can drink alcoholic beverages all day without getting drunk..people who don't drink at all don't understand that some LIKE the taste of alcholic beverages and drink them without the purpose of getting drunk. You can drink a couple of beers around your kids..it doesn't make you an alcholic. Alcoholic beverages are not evil. You can show your kids there is such a thing as drinking responsibly.
Either you're missing the point or I'm not being clear. I do not understand the allure for children for a day of beer sampling. If you're going to have a day to lure children to the zoo, have special zoo events in which they can participate. This is my point. I have no problem with people drinking with children around; this happens all the day. Responsible drinking is also good. But I do wonder what audience they are aiming for, offering beer and live rock music, and if the commercial itself wasn't directed at the wrong cohort.
They are aiming for ALL audiences actually. I think alot of people are probably under the impression that a day at the zoo is for your kids alone. Kids don't have money. There has to be more appeal for adults than hanging around with a bunch of kids all day.
"zooz" near hear offers rock concerts and wine tasting along with tours of the Zoo. It's a way to get more funding. Zoos are having a really hard time. They lack the appeal of someplaces like MArine land who force thier captive animals to perform tricks and set up amusement rides.
The Toronto Zoo is having trouble too due to a drop in memberships. It has been relying on Gov't Grants for some time now.
