Query for the Catholic Church

(And for those of you unfamiliar with the King's English, "query" does not refer to the sexual orientation of the leaders of said organization. I really don't care about that. I'm just asking a question here.)

I was at a celebrated local eating establishment today. It was my first time there for their Sunday buffet, and I picked a lousy day to go because apparently a monseignor all the way from Ireland was here so there was over 80 people just from that group alone. Which meant that they ran out of stuffed turkey just as I got to that station. And I Don't Do Sausages first thing in the day. So I went meatless. But I digress.

I'm in line with a slew of Catholic priests and elderly Catholic parishoners and I'm the youngest person by about 20 years... and I so wanted to ask this question which has recently been plaguing me during my "off hours." I refrained, and am quite proud of myself. But since I don't want to explode with all this refraining and repressing, I'm going to ask my question here, 'cause that's what my blog is for... expressing my opinions and asking the questions that have plagued me since the Dawn of (my) Time, or at least since I first thought of them.

So here's the question.

If it is a sin for human males to masturbate because they are wastefully spilling seed which Could Become Life, why isn't it a sin for females to waste those precious monthly eggs? There are WAY more (like millions?) of those sperm in males, and their bodies can always make more, and now, thanks to Viagra, their bodies DELIVER more WAY past the point where we're comfortable considering the distribution process. Sperm are not a limited resource.

But eggs, on the other hand, are. The female body only has so many of them, and the number varies by female. In addition, the quality of the eggs degrade with age, such that a woman's eggs when she is in her 20's are of a superior quality than are those of a woman in her 40's. And they are of a limited number. Every month that an egg goes unfertilized is another potential life that is literally flushed down the drain. Which is just sad.

So here's my thought. If it is a sin to waste even one of the millions of sperm that males have, is it not a greater sin to waste even one of the only hundreds of eggs that a woman has? Shouldn't we be putting good Catholic girls on The Pill just as soon as they hit puberty so that those precious eggs can be stored and kept for the day when she is ready to have children, ready to allow those eggs to continue on their journey to becoming a human being?

Just a thought. Going back to potting my plants now.

I wonder if the monseignor is still at the restaurant....

you are odd. I think there are a limited amount of eggs available as a mehtod of natural birth control. It limits the amount of children possible for each couple. God didn't trust men with that responsibility. The pill wasn't invented untill looooOOoong after our creation. Be honest though..you're really just trying to get out of having to have a period once a month ;-) while we're on that topic, the alternative is us being able to produce more eggs. Do you really want to go through that MORE than once a month!?

I think you're missing my point. I'm not wondering why men have millions of sperm and women have only thousands of eggs, or that women should be "primed" more often per month. I'm saying that if it's a sin to waste sperm, it should logically also be a sin to waste eggs. I'm giving a legitimate argument for the use of birth controll pills for good Catholics.

And yeah, some relief for the rest of us too...!

Catholics (some) belief that life begins AT the egg. Restricting it's developement is equal to murder. Keep in mind the Pope doesn't like condoms either. Birth control is evil period in his eyes. It encourages sex for pleasure and that's not what they (he) believes in. Sex is for proper marital reproductive purposes only.
That doesn't explain why it feels so good though ;-)

But is it murder if it only delays the process, not preventing? Once you come off the pill, those eggs are ready to continue the process.

And yes, sex isn't supposed to be fun.

Oops. Desing flaw there...!

I used to be Catholic.
In the Bible I think there's a passage that talked about the sin of spilling seed on the ground by withdrawal to prevent impregnation.

In the church, since St. Augustine, 3rd or 4th Century, sexual activity for pleasure is sinful if there is no chance for conception. St. Augustine believed that the human body was filthy and sinful. He even left his wife and six children because of that belief.

Anyway, the point is that sexual gratification that cannot end in conception was evil. Unfortunately, the church adopted that as dogma and it, in my humble opinion, has very destructive to Catholics. My then husband and I had nine children we couldn't afford before he left me alone with no money or support.

I am in my 70s now so it was a long time ago but even in todays world, that is still dogma. Most Catholics are smarter than I was. They do practise birth control.

I hope this helps you understand it.
